When we first purchased 431 Northampton Street, opening an event venue wasn't part of the plan. Our vision was much simpler. The second floor would become our private residence, while the first floor would become the new home of our business, Platinum Star Cleaning. We loved the character of the building, its location in Downtown Easton, and the opportunity to restore it while creating a place where we could both live and work. Then, almost by chance, a conversation with the building's previous owner changed everything. He told us that the basement had once been used as a speakeasy.
Suddenly, we looked at the building differently. What had simply been the basement became one of its most intriguing spaces—and we couldn't stop thinking about what it might have been like during the Prohibition era. Who had gathered there? What stories had those walls witnessed? How many people had descended those stairs next door to spend an evening somewhere they weren't necessarily supposed to be? We knew then that we didn't want that part of the building's story to disappear.
So, our plans changed. What began as a home for ourselves and our business grew into something much more ambitious: restoring the basement as the Easton Speakeasy and transforming the adjoining spaces into an elegant, intimate venue for private events. We didn't want to create a themed room or a reproduction of the 1920s. We wanted the building to feel as though its history had simply been uncovered and brought back to life.
That philosophy guided the entire renovation. Downstairs, the Speakeasy took on a darker, more intimate personality—rich mahogany and deep blues, vintage-inspired details and polished chrome creating a space that feels hidden away from the world outside.
Upstairs, the Dining Room became its elegant counterpart, with dramatic crystal chandeliers, classic architectural detailing, black-and-white marble floors and a baby grand piano setting the stage for dinners, celebrations, music and conversation.
And through it all, the building has remained something very personal to us. We still live here. Platinum Star Cleaning still calls it home. But now, on certain evenings, we get to open the doors and share a part of it with others. Today, the Easton Speakeasy & Dining Room is an upscale private event venue created for the kinds of gatherings we love ourselves—intimate weddings, private dinners, cocktail parties, live entertainment, celebrations and evenings that deserve a setting that's a little out of the ordinary.
In many ways, we didn't set out to create the Easton Speakeasy. We discovered it.
And once we learned its story, we knew it deserved another chapter.
